Friday April 17, 2015 is the 20th annual observance of the Day of Silence. Students across the United States and around the world will voluntarily make a commitment to remain silent for the day to show support for all those who feel obligated to live a silent life to protect themselves from discrimination, harassment, and abuse.
The first Day of Silence was held on the campus of the University of Virginia in 1996 and has grown to become the single largest student led protest in the world creating safer schools for ALL students regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
To support the local efforts of our students, GLSEN - New York Capital Region Chapter has organized the annual Breaking the Silence Rally at the EGG since April of 2002.
EVENT DETAILS!
4:30pm Doors Open
5pm Countdown begins!
5:30pm Speak Out
9pm DANCE
This event, free of charge to participants, gives our LGBTQA youth and their allies an opportunity to come together and break their vow of silence as a group. Once the silence is broken, an open mic program encourages everyone to come up on stage and share their experiences.
For many, this event will be the ONLY day in their year in which they are comfortable enough to be truly themselves.
